Description
Glutathione is the principal intracellular antioxidant tripeptide (gamma-glutamyl-cysteinyl-glycine), present in nearly every cell type. It is studied in oxidative-stress, detoxification and redox-signalling research, where the ratio of reduced to oxidized glutathione is a standard marker of cellular redox state.

Research summaries
Glutathione and cellular redox balance
Glutathione serves as the substrate for glutathione peroxidase and S-transferase enzymes, neutralizing peroxides and conjugating electrophilic compounds for excretion. The GSH:GSSG ratio is widely used in the literature as an index of oxidative stress in tissue and cell models.
Glutathione is the body’s main internal antioxidant and its oxidized-to-reduced ratio is a standard laboratory measure of oxidative stress.
Bioavailability of administered glutathione
Pharmacokinetic literature notes that orally administered glutathione is extensively hydrolyzed in the gut, prompting research interest in parenteral routes and in precursors such as N-acetylcysteine. Studies of systemic administration report variable effects on tissue glutathione concentrations.
How much administered glutathione actually reaches cells is the central open question in this literature.
